“Play and improvisation are an important part of my work process as an artist. The spirit within me, my creative energy combined with my playful approach leads to an outpouring of creative output. I loose myself in my paintings, they are not planned works but a raw response to the paint, materials and mark making. Often figures, animals and human characters emerge in the works. There are folk narratives behind many of my paintings that come from my time living in North Carolina, USA where I was inspired by folk art and country life. I would describe the ‘Spirit At Play’ exhibition to be a series of works spanning several years where I tapped into my the spirit of creative play.” Michelle Connolly, 2017.
