Bending Reality by Paul Williams and Phillipa Butters
6 May - 25 May

—Opening 6 May Saturday, 3-5pm—
Bending Reality is the fourth exciting collaboration between acclaimed artists Phillipa Butters and Paul Williams, continuing their shared affinity for spontaneity and abstraction. This exhibition further explores alternative representation, ‘bending reality’ to incorporate different layers, textures, and possibilities. Butters’ work references moments of sensory engagement ‘en plein air’, often beginning with a playful and intuitive exploration that stimulates an original connotation, unfolding with unexpected outcomes on her canvas. Williams draws his inspiration from the luminous twilight skies surrounding the seashore. He conveys this radiant quality through layering of thick paint coalesced with a vivid colour pallet. By responding to novel insights, his interpretation of the landscape and the human form is instinctive, employing his signature unconventional style.
“My work on canvas was inspired by the brilliant evening skies looking seawards from Balmoral Beach…exploring the transcendental effects of dusk. While my work on paper depicts the figure in a free and edgy style” – Paul Williams.
“My creativity is a response to and relationship with nature’s everchanging elements that inspire reimagining, redefining, and abstraction, bringing new narratives and meaning” – Phillipa Butters.
