BEVERLEY WOOLLETT
Artist Statement
The latest exhibition Connexion, heighten figurative art, which is an inescapable part of my art practice, either by drawing with pastel or charcoal, painting with a paint brush, even with my cut-out collages. On several painting trips to North Eastern Victoria, I have invariably been fascinated by their distant rolling hills, finding in their rounded shapes a relationship with the human form. In some of my mountainous landscapes the similar contours of the human figure are replicated so that they, become merged with their surroundings. In other artworks the figures are superimposed, floating or drifting above the landscape, suggesting that the person depicted is linked in a close relationship with the earth below. And so, I am leaving open to interpretation the role, or intent of the figure in each setting or even suggesting a more universal concept, questioning our relationship with the environment.
