Everyday Mix-Ups by Joanna Gambotto
27 September - 16 October
—Opening Reception: 6-8pm, 27 September—-
Sydney-based artist Joanna Gambotto encapsulates the fine line between reality and fantasy in Everyday Mix-Ups, a series of vibrantly layered painted and collaged works. Each canvas contains various fragmented elements of places visited by the artist in the past. The final work houses a diverse array of furnishings and colour, proving to be a warm testament to the artist’s earlier memories alongside the fresh touch of her own innovative creation. In reconciling the old with the new, Gambotto deliberately preserves the history of her intuitive creative process in order to celebrate the wealth of both physical and metaphorical layers that inhabit the composition of her works.
“The laborious process of adding paint, scraping and carving results in a sensuous surface, rich in texture, pattern and layers and becomes a metaphor of how a place can be filled with emotions, memories and history.” – Joanna Gambotto
