Otherness by Phillipa Butters and Paul Williams
22 February - 13 March
—Opening Reception: 6-8pm, 22 February—
Otherness is a duo exhibition by Phillipa Butters and Paul Williams who share a parallel propensity for spontaneity in their contemporary art practice. Artist cum Art Therapist, Butters, focuses on what it is to be human not only in form but also in relation to the human condition and context. This has allowed her to explore the unknown relationships between both the figure and landscape, creating works with a sense of person or place, often organic and abstracted. Multi award winning artist, Williams, explores the human form showcasing works that are defined by a broad language of mark making and layered texture, displaying an acute awareness of space and colour harmonies.
“This mindful process of observation, connection and interaction, uses different techniques of mark making, layering or scraping back with line, tone, shape, texture, space and colour, finding and losing elements until a sense of balance, resolution and meaning is found.” – Phillipa Butters
“I am passionately interested in the physical and psychological possibilities offered by the human form. My thinking is highly intuitive, almost reckless, as I seek unforeseen images beyond the real.” – Paul Williams
This exhibition will be opened by Mark Stapleton, an independent consultant working in arts, culture and the public, private and community sectors.
