A Piece of the Continent by Sharon Pincus Jacobson
2 May - 21 May
Jacobson dedicates her series of paintings to Namibia, on the South Western Coast of Africa. Her emotional immersion within the Namibian environment has inspired Jacobson to evoke an atmosphere of heat, thorns, dust and timelessness in this series of paintings. Employing yellows, oranges, mauves, faded ochres, dramatic vistas and outstretched roads, Jacobson recreates the colours and textures of its unique landscape and people. Further accentuating this vibrant experience of the land, she sometimes incorporates collaged beads from Namibian jewellery to heighten the stubbly landscape as well as utilising a different mode to convey the pristine and geometrical sand dunes at dawn and dusk.
“Images that surrounded me in my early life in Africa, captivate me. I feel like I am inside its mountains, hills, rocks and thornbushes. It is because of the power of these recognizable images for me, that I aspire to bring them to life in my paintings.” – Sharon Pincus Jacobson
The exhibition will be opened by artist Francis Giacco, 1994 Archibald Prize Winner.
